Point Showdown

Point ShowdownPoint Showdown gives the highlights of New Zealand`s 3rd and final WQS surf contest, with quality surf in the three to six foot range pumping throughout the event.
Manu Bay is an excellent contest venue with close viewing for large numbers of spectators.
From the start there`s no misunderstanding about which nation will dominate.
The video introduces competitors from Japan, Hawaii and the US, South Africa, Britain and Brazil but only Maz Quinn shows the flag, briefly, for New Zealand. The sad, simple fact is all the other Kiwis got eliminated early on.
The rest of the way it`s Australia, with last years winner Danny Wills, finishing second to countyman Mick Cambpell in the final. Other trans-Tasman standouts include Matt Hoy, Brendan Margieson, Shane Wehner, Nicky Wood, Lee Winkler, Jay Phillips and the Fitzgerald brothers to name a few.
The soft and sometimes sectiony surf favours the lighter, more agile performers, but it has to be remembered that while Manu Bay appears to break in unhurried fashion, the swell itself is moving fast. The net result is speed down the line.
The Aussies are all over the place, charging out onto the shoulder, back into the whitewater, doing tail slides, long floaters, and savage last minute moves with amazing recoveries.
The soundtrack features 100% NZ music from Wildside records to get you amped. Rabbit Bartholomew`s commentary is also included.
The presentation has Rabbit saying how John Snelling did an incredible job putting this thing together and thanking the sponsors Coke and Billabong.
As straight coverage of a sporting event this video is excellent with good camera work both ashore and in the water.

Wet Rubber

Wet Rubber is a collaborative effort with Phil Erickson and shows top surfers in action during 1998. Included is the NZSRA Nationals in Northland, the Raglan No Fear Pro, Kaikoura Classic, plus Matakana Island and epic footage from the North Shore of Oahu.
The Hawaiian footage has water shots at Rocky Point showing clear water and the sharp reef below . Heavy pits at the Pipe Masters during round one and Sunset explodes with the power and fury of one the biggest winters on record. There`s even guys towing in way out the back on these monsters!
Back in NZ excellent surfing is seen at the No Fear Raglan Pro where Daniel Kereopa and Emmerson Tucker show their talents. Once again Maz takes the honours.
Wet Rubber has strong South Island content. The Kaikoura Classic shows mainlanders in top form as well as the others that travelled to the event. Crisp conditions can only make you jealous as Jai Earnshaw , Nuku Nash, and a host of others show off their tricks! Nuku takes us to a secret river bar where he goes mental with his aerial attack.
Justin Souter gets barrelled off his nut in some pretty gnarly onshore Matakana which infortunately shows that the waves are not always perfect in paradise.
Some classic antics finish the video as the credits roll. Add this video to your collection to look back on in years to come.
